Decrease Techniques

When working raglan decreases, there is often used left leaning decreases and right leaning decreases. The two common ways to decrease is "SSK" and "K2tog"

SSK / left-leaning decrease

A left-leaning decrease is often abberiviated with "SSK" which is short form of "Slip, Slip, knit".

The decrease is knitted as follows:

  1. Slip 1 stitch over to the right needle, knit wise

  2. Slip another stitch over to the right needle, knit wise.

  3. Place both stitches back onto the left needle.

  4. Knit the two stitches together through the back loop.

This is a video of a left leaning decrease. Pay attention to where the needle is inserted.

K2tog/ Knit 2 together/ right leaning decrease

A right leaning decrease is often abberiviated with "k2tog" which is short for "knit 2 stitches together" This decrease is a bit simpler than the SSK, and is basically a knit stitch, but with two stitches.

Here is a video of the stitch:

Tips:

A SSK is not as neat as the k2tog, this can easily be corrected by knitting the stitch through the back loop on the next row/round.
